On the road to level crossing removal

  • 17 February 2020

Downer are the preferred proponent to construct the road and civil infrastructure components of the Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal project.

The project will replace the current Denny Avenue level crossing with a rail-over-road underpass at the nearby Davis Road.

Though the project is delivered under two separate design and construct contracts, Downer is the preferred contractor for both based on its bids which demonstrated expertise to complete the works.

An unintended benefit in the two packages being delivered by the same contractor is the interface risk is minimised.

The road package includes realigning Third Avenue, gradually sinking Davis Road under the elevated rail line, new cul-de-sacs for Third and Slee avenues and works on Albany Highway.

Davis Road will also be widened from two to four lanes and three sets of traffic lights will be installed at the Albany Highway, Streich Avenue and Railway Avenue intersections.

The civic works include supporting the Kelmscott Town Centre revitalisation and extensive landscaping and tree planting.

Downer are now tasked with finalising designs and confirming how they plan on building the redesigned road layout while minimising community impact.

While project designs are being finalised, early works are already underway and the team is working closely with third parties to confirm the relocation of underground service utility infrastructure in the project area. Major construction is expected to start mid-2020.
