As Perth's population grows, more homes will be built, more blocks subdivided, and more apartment buildings erected. Alternative transport solutions to the private vehicle are required to ensure this doesn't impact on our liveability and cause congestion in the suburbs.
The Department of Transport began the early stages of planning for light rail in Perth in 2017 as a METRONET Stage 1 priority. This planning work for light rail reached a milestone in June 2019 that culminated in an Infrastructure Australia (IA) Stage 1 submission – problem identification. Further investigations are currently on hold.
Light rail, or any future mass transit network, is still being considered by the Government and will attract more focus once current METRONET projects have progressed.
