Tunnelling complete on Forrestfield Airport-Link

  • 21 April 2020

TBM Sandy has seen the light at the end of the tunnel as she broke through at Bayswater Junction yesterday (20 April), marking the end of tunnelling on the Forrestfield-Airport Link project. A journey which spanned over 900 days, TBM Sandy tunnelled through varied and sometimes challenging conditions including under Perth Airport and the Swan River. Sandy's arrival at Bayswater completes a total of 16 kilometres of tunnelling following TBM Grace’s breakthrough in February.

Together the TBMs have installed a total of 9,000 tunnel rings, comprising 54,000 locally fabricated concrete segments to form the tunnel walls, which will link three new stations at Forrestfield, Airport Central and Redcliffe to the existing rail network.

With tunnelling now complete, TBM Sandy will be dismantled and craned out of the dive structure.

Installation of the first stage of track slab is 50 per cent complete and track laying is scheduled to begin in July. Construction and fit-out of the station buildings continues.
