The Forrestfield-Airport Link has received the Concrete Institute of Australia (WA) Award for Excellence in the Technology and Innovation Category for 2019 for production of the concrete tunnel segments used on the project.
The judges said the team had gone “well and truly above and beyond what is the norm”.
Together with concrete supplier Boral a high quality, durable and sustainable product was delivered, in a locally built customised production plant in Forrestfield.
The production of more than 54,000 segments required to line the 15kms of Forrestfield-Airport Link tunnels is now complete and has set a new standard in the production of precast tunnel lining segments in Australia.
To date, the project’s tunnel boring machines, Grace and Sandy, have installed more than 30,000 of the segments to form the two tunnels.
The State award win means the team is now in the running for the National Awards for Excellence in Concrete, to be announced in Sydney in September.
