Additional Federal funding allocated for METRONET projects

  • 6 May 2021

The Federal Government announced on 4 May an additional $347.5 million for the Inner Armadale Line Level Crossing Removal and Byford Rail Extension projects.

We’ve been busy planning to remove up to six level crossing on the Armadale Line, with the Mint Street, Oats Street and Welshpool Road level crossing removals and new elevated Carlisle and Oats St stations fully funded for construction. The additional Federal contribution allows for Hamilton and Wharf streets level crossing removal, with a new elevated station at Queens Park and consideration for a major upgrade to Cannington Station.

Removing the level crossings will improve safety, ease congestion, create more connections, revitalise the area and create versatile public spaces for the community. The final scope will be confirmed when the contract is awarded later this year.

For the Byford Rail Extension project, the Federal Government’s contribution allows for consideration of elevated rail to remove Armadale Road, Forrest Road and Church Avenue level crossings with a new elevated Armadale Station.  The final scope will be confirmed when the contract is awarded later this year.

Two shortlisted proponents are currently developing proposals to show how they will deliver the projects as part of the competitive bid phase.
