Airport Central Station taking off

  • 28 February 2020

Catching the train to work isn’t new, but catching the train to the airport will soon be a new reality for Perth locals and tourists alike.

The construction of Airport Central Station has reached 70 percent completion. Until now, the majority of works at the site has been underground with significant excavation undertaken to build the three-level railway hub.

The start of construction of the roof structure marks a new phase in above-ground construction for the project. The first girders of the 137-tonne roof structure are being craned into place. The 137 tonnes of steel has been fabricated locally by Naval Base company Pacific Industrial Co.

“As a local WA business we are pleased to contribute to such a landmark project for Perth. I and many of the staff involved look forward to the day we can take the train to the airport and transit through the station ourselves.” - Marco Mosole, Managing Director

The process is expected to take three months following which specially designed sheeting, which will reduce glare for pilots flying in and out of Perth Airport, is installed.

The Skybridge link between Airport Central Station and Perth Airport is also close to completion. The 280m-long elevated walkway features travelators and information screens and will provide a seamless connection between the station and Terminals 1 and 2.

Following the arrival of TBM Grace at Bayswater Junction earlier this month, TBM Sandy is due mid this year and her arrival will mark another significant milestone for the project, the end of tunnelling.

Once operational in late 2021, the Forrestfield-Airport Link will provide a 20-minute direct link between the eastern foothills and the CBD – as well as the wider public transport network – via the airport.
