Permanent Whatley Crescent closure in early June

  • 19 May 2021

From 7pm, Friday 11 June, Whatley Crescent will permanently close between Hamilton and King William streets to allow works to continue on the new Bayswater Station and lowering Whatley Crescent to connect to Beechboro Road South.

This follows the Whatley Crescent lane reduction to only city bound traffic in this area in early 2021.

Once closed, to get around the suburb, road users can use Olfe, Newton and Slade streets, and the principal shared path detour will be temporarily relocated to the northern side of Whatley Crescent.

Pedestrians will continue to have access to businesses along this section, and the carpark located on the corner of Coode Street and Railway Parade will remain open.

Once the changes are in place, pedestrian access to the town centre will be available under the rail bridge from Coode Street or via the pedestrian level crossing and shared path to Slade Street.

However, the pedestrian underpass from Bayswater Station to Whatley Crescent will remain closed on the southern side.

Various directional signs are in place to help ease any confusion and to help community members to become accustomed to the changes.

The final road layout in Bayswater will:

  • Improve traffic flow, which currently experiences a pinch point under the rail bridge.
  • Create safer pedestrian connections by improving the intersection phasing.
  • Allow for buses to better connect to the station without using residential streets or taking private property for a dedicated bus facility.
  • Be designed to encourage slower traffic movements through the area.
