METRONET projects are not only improving people’s lives through new public transport across Perth, they’re also providing new skills, training and job opportunities for Aboriginal employees.
Jonathan (Johnny) Williams-Anderson grew up in the Northern Territory and moved to Perth with the hope of providing a more stable and supportive environment for his young family.
With some construction experience and a Certificate II in Civil Construction in hand, Johnny jumped at an opportunity to join the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line Project in December 2022 as a trainee to boost his professional development.
The role not only enabled him to upskill and gain a Certificate III in Civil Construction, but also encouraged him to make healthier life choices to “improve himself, all round” knowing he was making those around him proud.
After successfully completing the traineeship and also obtaining eight machine tickets, Johnny was offered another role with project contractor Laing O’Rourke on the METRONET Byford Rail Extension Project.
Johnny’s message to others looking for a career in construction: “don’t give up and work hard.” He hopes his story will encourage others to take the plunge, step up and make a change.
