Closing the Denny Avenue level crossing is a major milestone, but it’s still a long road ahead for the project as roadworks and Kelmscott revitalisation works continue until late-2021.
Once the Davis Road underpass is open shortly after the major disruption, works will continue on Davis Road, Streich Avenue, Railway Avenue and Third Avenue to complete the roadworks.
The last stage of road works on Albany Highway (east) will conclude with asphalting and then works move to Albany Highway (west) to construct new turning lanes and the new signalised intersection at Davis Road.
Meanwhile works continue on Railway Avenue with asphalting and pavement reinstatement south of Third Avenue, and the widening and installation of extended residential driveways to the north of Bray Street. Works on the new Third Avenue will be completed mid-2021.
A section of Third Avenue and Slee Avenue will be made into cul-de-sacs and the new realigned Third Avenue will be completed by September.
Streich Avenue (near Kelmscott Station) will be slightly realigned near where it meets Albany Highway to accommodate a new station plaza design. Works on Denny Avenue start in April to reduce Denny Avenue to two lanes.
The Kelmscott Station car park on the west side (on Railway Avenue) will be extended by approximately 40 bays, and works will include asphalting, kerbing and painting car bays.
The icing on the Kelmscott cake will be works to the Station Master’s House, creating a new plaza outside Kelmscott Station along with landscaping and public art throughout the town centre. Artwork will also be installed on the new bridge.
This work will aim to capture Kelmscott’s local character with tributes to the area’s heritage and culture, community activities, and have a welcoming vibe. As part of the revitalisation, the current plans of the station plaza include:
In areas with enough room, canopy trees will be planted, while in areas with reduced capacity, native trees will be planted, including near the embankment walls on Railway and Streich avenues.
