Serious Business for Level Crossing Removals

  • 31 August 2020

Removing level crossings is serious business and in good news for the Inner Armadale Line Level Crossing Removals Project, the Business Case has been submitted to Infrastructure Australia.

The project will see three level crossings at Oats Street, Mint Street and Welshpool Road removed. The level crossing removals at Mint Street, Oats Street and Welshpool Road was allocated $415 million in the 2019/20 State Budget. The business case also proposes removal of a further three level crossings, at William Street, Wharf Street and Hamilton Street.

Elevated rail is the preferred option for removing these crossings. There is also an option for a road over rail solution at Hamilton Street.

Removing these at-grade level crossings and replacing them with elevated rail provides a cost-effective solution to safety issues along the Armadale Line, while maintaining thoroughfares for motorists and serving as a catalyst for better design, placemaking and development opportunities around the train line.

With the project progressing, two Community Reference Groups have recently been established and will help inform the concept design. This follows wider community consultation   including a survey with almost 500 responses, two online information sessions and two community drop-in sessions.
