Three stations being built under the METRONET New Bayswater Station and Morley-Ellenbrook Line projects have achieved Green Star Design Review ratings, and are all on track to receive a 5 Star Green Star – Railway Stations v1.1 rating.
Ballajura Station, Ellenbrook Station and new Bayswater Station are the first railway stations in Western Australia to have achieved the Green Star Design Review ratings, ensuring sustainable design outcomes have been designed, ready for construction.
Subject to final certification, this means all three stations are set to represent ‘Australian Excellence in Sustainable Design’. The Certification Trademark is registered by Green Building Council of Australia and delivers independent verification of sustainable outcomes in the design and construction of buildings.
Sustainability Manager Linda van Achterbergh explains that the certification is a major sustainability milestone for METRONET, the individual projects and the three stations.
“Achieving the Green Star Design Review ratings demonstrates METRONET’s commitment to achieving objectives under our Sustainability Strategy, which focuses on delivering projects in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner. It is a testament to our focus on implementing best practice sustainable design in stations,” Linda said.
The rigorous process of achieving the design rating included two stages of peer review and assessment of station design based on sustainability outcomes covering management, indoor environment quality, energy, transport, water, materials, land use and ecology, emissions, and innovation.
Initiatives that helped Ballajura and Ellenbrook stations achieve the design rating include:
- 99 kW solar PV systems to be installed at each station
- 10 electric vehicle charging bays per station
- urban design that celebrates public space, nature, and art
- reduction in Greenhouse Gases Emissions during operation
- maximising native planting to minimise irrigation and reduce water use
- using materials with circular economy outcomes, responsible manufacturing practices, and/or sustainably labelled products
Initiatives that helped New Bayswater Station achieve the design rating include:
- 87 kW solar PV system to be installed the station
- 4 electric vehicle charging bays
- reduction in Greenhouse Gases Emissions during operation
- use of non-potable water for irrigation
- water efficient sanitary fixtures
- efficient waste management and recycling practices
Each project will implement several measures to ensure sustainable outcomes continue to be realised during the construction phase, including using recycled materials and reducing water consumption. Once built, the stations will be assessed by the Green Building Council for final Certification under Green Star – Railway Stations v1.1.
