Bassendean company awarded bogie contract

  • 20 July 2020

The new METRONET C-Series trains will have a distinctly local flavour with Bassendean company Hofmann Engineering being appointed by Alstom to manufacture the bogie frames for the trains that will be manufactured and assembled locally at Bellevue.

Hofmann Engineering is a WA business at the forefront of innovation in engineering. It has produced sophisticated components for defence vehicles, trains, mining equipment and much more over the last 50 years.

Bogie frames support the vehicle body and house the wheels and braking equipment. Hofmann Engineering will install new equipment into its local facility to deliver the contract, supporting the creation of six new jobs.

Bogies are a key part of rail cars – they support the body and house the wheels and traction and braking equipment and Hofmann will procure the steel sheet then mark-out, cut, bend, prepare, weld, machine, clean, prepare and paint the bogie frames.

The Hofmann family recently showed Transport Minister Rita Saffioti and Dave Kelly MP around their facility.

The first of the new six-car C-Series railcars will be delivered in 2022 in time to service the Yanchep Rail Extension and Thornlie-Cockburn Link.
