Walls a hit in Thornlie

  • 21 March 2023

A section of noise walls have been installed along the rail corridor in Thornlie as part of the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link Project and residents like what they see…and cannot hear.

The sustainably made, terracotta-coloured concrete panel and steel noise walls have been provided to properties near the rail corridor in Lyrebird Way and Partridge Way.

Local residents Michael and Leah Christie of Partridge Way have made plenty of changes to their property over the past 20 years, but the new backyard noise wall has dwarfed other modifications.

Leah confesses she took time to adjust to the change.

“It has taken a little time to adjust to the new wall, but now I love it and I plan to make it more of a backyard feature by painting a mural on it,” Leah said.

I took part in the community vote on the colour and I think the light colour works well. I’m glad that it was the most popular choice.”

Michael has noticed that there is less noise from the freight trains since the noise wall has been installed, and it has also provided extra security.

Eventually, several kilometres of noise walls will be built, and noise modelling is being undertaken to determine locations. More information can be found on our noise wall fact sheet.
