“The construction industry is changing and needs more strong females in leadership to mentor younger generations. There is no one way to do things. Think outside the box, encourage new ideas and create a nurturing network to achieve your dreams and help others do the same.”
These words from engineer Sabrina Fortoul are a shining example of what it means to inspire inclusion – the theme for International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March 2024.
As the project engineer working on the platform, concourse and busway at Alkimos Station on the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension Project, Sabrina is passionate about her career and is certainly inspired to have a sense of belonging and empowerment, and share that with others.
‘My career in the rail industry started in Sydney, upgrading existing train stations and making them accessible for all users,” Sabrina explains.
“Seeing the community being able to use a transport system that caters for everyone was the most gratifying experience and one of the main reasons I wanted to continue in the rail and construction industry.”
“My role allows me to increase my knowledge in multiple disciplines and adapt my skillset as required for the project, and I love that each project or station is unique and has its own challenges and beauty,” she said.
The METRONET Sustainability Strategy supports diversity within the workplace and aligns with International Women’s Day 2024, which underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected.
