Public art takes centre stage at Alkimos Central

  • 24 November 2020

A major new public artwork by Noongar artist Sharyn Egan has been unveiled, developed in collaboration with 150 local school children.

Brightening up a 250-metre long stretch of temporary hoarding on Marmion Avenue, the work represents the artists’ interpretation of the students’ ideas for the future Alkimos Central city centre.

A DevelopmentWA project, the art was developed through workshops with Sharon Wood-Kenney and Aboriginal elders Doreen Green and Dr Noel Nannup, who shared local cultural stories with the students and guided their imagined future for the area.

The project reflects METRONET’s Public Art Strategy, which guides delivery of art across the program, drawing inspiration from Perth’s Aboriginal and local culture, history, landscape and place.

Alkimos Central is planned as a dynamic city centre, with an integrated transit hub that will become a vibrant place to live, learn, work and relax. The centre represents the largest planned concentration of employment, business and economic activity between Joondalup and Yanchep, and is part of DevelopmentWA’s master planned Alkimos region. At its heart will be Alkimos Station, part of the Yanchep Rail Extension project.

The Alkimos Central development will be home to more than 90,000 residents, and is anticipated to support around 1,500 construction jobs and up to 13,500 ongoing local jobs.

The METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension is on track for completion in late 2022, enabling future residents to travel to Perth by train from Alkimos Station in approximately 41 minutes.
