Following drilling to relocate BP’s Kewdale White Oil Line (KWOL), the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link Project team has shifted its attention to building a bridge for the pipeline over the Canning River (Djarlgarra) in Thornlie.
This bridge has been connected to the underside of the existing bridge and five 50-tonne steel trusses for this structure were recently lifted into place to support the pipeline using a 750-tonne crane.
Specialist underground drilling was used to relocate around 11km of the KWOL pipeline from the freight rail corridor to allow room for the project’s new rail infrastructure.
Horizontal directional drilling was used to avoid the need for extensive trench digging, minimising the disruption to nearby properties and reducing environmental impacts.
KWOL transports fuel from BP’s Kwinana operations to the Kewdale terminal of Perth Airport.
