Alstom Transport Australia is the preferred supplier for the 246 new C-series railcars.

After a rigorous competitive tender process, with shortlisted proponents required to demonstrate how they will meet a target of 50 per cent local content for the new trains Alstom Transport Australia was deemed the preferred based on their technical ability and approach to supporting locally based jobs.

While the final design and features of the railcars will be determined in liaison with Alstom, the six-car trains will carry about 1200 passengers and include additional and wider passenger doors making it easier and quicker to get on and off.

The new C-series railcars will be more energy efficient and designed to accommodate future upgrades throughout their operational life of 35 years. Technology including USB charging points, LED lighting and regenerative braking will also be installed.

The $1.6billion METRONET railcar project will be delivered in stages over the next 10 years.

METRONET is now working closely with Alstom on the final contract negotiation expected to be finalised by late 2019.

For local businesses wanting to be part of the railcar supply chain, a new round of funding through the  METRONET Local Capability Fund is now open.

Applications are also open for 60 new Transperth railcar drivers who will be among the first to drive trains on METRONET projects. Applications close at 9am on August 30, for more information visit the PTA’s website.
