New METRONET railcars move a step closer

Today two METRONET milestones for the Railcar Program were announced.

Location of new railcar manufacturing facility

Bellevue has been selected as the preferred site for the new railcar manufacturing facility that will assemble the 102 new METRONET railcars (17 six-car sets) and an additional 144 railcars (24 six-car sets) to replace the ageing A-series trains.

The approval for the facility is expected in the coming month from the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, with construction to start in 2019.

New C-series railcar suppliers shortlisted

Three consortiums have been short-listed to participate in a tender for the supply of the new 246 railcars.

The consortiums are:

An important consideration in this tender process will be that the company can demonstrate an ability to manufacture or assemble 50 per cent of the railcars in Western Australia.

The successful tenderer will be announced in early 2019.
