Midland was once Perth’s home for the railway industry, and with Midland TAFE is set to become a specialist METRONET Trade Training Centre in 2020 that long history returns.

On 4 March 1994, the Australian flag was lowered for the last time at the Midland workshops, ending 90 years of Western Australian railway history.

Now, 25 years later things are on track to bring those skills back, with Bellevue identified as the site to assemble the 246 new C-Series railcars delivered as part of the $1.6 billion Railcar Program.

Supporting this project is the plan to redevelop the Midland TAFE and its workshops into a specialist centre that provides the specific technical and support skills required for railcar manufacturing and METRONET maintenance.

The METRONET Trade Training Centre will be three kilometres from the site of the new Bellevue Assembly Facility, where the new C-Series will be commissioned, with a target of 50 per cent local content.

Together the Railcar Program and Midland TAFE program to aims to build our local skills, bolster our local manufacturing industry and maximise WA jobs.

Delivery of the first 17 METRONET trains, known as the C-series, is due to begin in 2021, with the remaining 24 trains expected to enter service between 2023 and 2028.
