Yanchep Line Officially Open

  • 15 July 2024

On Sunday, 14 July more than 8,500 people came together from across Perth to celebrate the completion of the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension Project.

Yanchep Station was a buzz of excitement as the community enjoyed the fun-filled family event with live music, face painting, circus performers and magicians, a sausage sizzle, fairy floss, doughnuts, METRONET showbags and community stalls.

The Yanchep Rail Extension has delivered 14.5km of new rail from Butler to Yanchep and new stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep - helping support ongoing growth in the area and reduce traffic congestion.

Project facts - did you know?

  • Three green bridges were built to provide a safe crossing for local fauna

  • The new C-series trains are now running on the Yanchep Line

  • 3,292 piles were used for retaining walls along the rail corridor. If stacked end-to-end, they would cover 53 km – that’s more than the distance from Perth to Yanchep

  • Nearly 2 million cubic metres of earth was moved during construction, with 1.7 million cubic metres reused on other major projects such as the Mitchell Freeway Extension

  • Yanchep Station has three tracks so trains can swap directions and return to Perth.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate this exciting milestone in Perth’s rail history!
