In the eight months since major works kicked off the Yanchep Rail Extension many a milestone has been achieved.
NEWest Alliance (CPB Contractors and Downer) who are tasked with building the 14.5km project have established site offices, access tracks and stockpiles, removed and safely stored 500 grass trees, installed bores, and completed utility service relocations on Yanchep Beach Road and Pipidinny Road.
On an average day, more than 40 pieces of heavy-duty plant equipment are currently operating across the projects six sites and will increase to up to 200 during peak construction. In November and December alone $30 million worth of local (Western Australian or Australian suppliers) contracts were awarded for project works.
As the project progresses more than 9000 tonnes of steel will be used to build the rail, the equivalent of two thirds of the steel used to build Optus Stadium. 1.75 million cubic metres of earth will be excavated in total, with Alkimos Station now well underway.
Sustainability remains front of mind and the team are also completing a pilot trial of a limestone crusher, which has been turning local rock in to a sustainable construction. The limestone will form part of the materials used in the 350,000 blocks which will build the retaining walls on the project.
Station construction is due to begin in early 2021, with the project on track for completion in 2022.
