The future is looking much brighter for Sage Lockyer and Jonathon Slater after beginning civil construction traineeships and starting work with METRONET’s Thornlie-Cockburn Link.

Sage and Jonathon’s path to construction jobs started with the State Government’s Infrastructure Ready program and they are now studying their Certificate III in Civil Construction at South Metropolitan TAFE.

Before starting in construction, Sage worked in childcare and is ecstatic to work on this important project.

“I’m being supported to learn, while earning a regular wage. I’m now looking to buy my own home, which is something I wouldn’t have expected to be able to do aged in my twenties,” Sage says.

Jonathon, an Aboriginal man with a young family, considers it a privilege to work on METRONET.

“Working on this project is an honour. One day I’ll be able to share this with my children and say that I helped build that rail or that station,” Jonathan says.

“There are so many opportunities in the construction industry and I’m pleased to be part of a project making a difference to Western Australia.”

The State Government is helping West Australians like Sage and Jonathon take advantage of these new opportunities, while supporting industries essential to the state’s economic recovery.
