Work didn’t stop over the Easter long weekend, with the Caledonian Avenue Level Crossing closing on Good Friday.

The boom gates came down for the final time on Friday 15 April, making it the second level crossing permanently removed under the METRONET Program.

Highlighted as one of the highest risk crossings on the rail network, the decommissioning means increased safety and access for road users, cyclists and pedestrians.

With train frequency increasing on the Midland Line in conjunction with the soon-to-be-opened Airport Line, road users would have experienced longer wait times with the boom gates down; increasing the potential for risk-taking behaviour, as well as significant impacts on local roads.

To support the level crossing closure and enhance safety and access to Maylands Town Centre, the State Government has set aside $15 million to fund a series of local road improvements.

Main Roads is working with the Public Transport Authority to improve access to Maylands Station underpass for cyclists and pedestrians. Bus access to the Maylands Town Centre and station is also being investiagted.
