From trains to brains: METRONET and Scitech team up for STEM

  • 13 March 2024

What do you get when you combine science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the curious and enthusiastic minds of primary school students? A fun and educational experience that sparks interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers and possibilities for the future.

That’s exactly what four primary schools near the METRONET New Midland Station and Byford Rail Extension projects will receive as METRONET partners with Scitech’s Schools’ Access Program.

“We are uniquely positioned to promote student engagement with STEM education because these children are seeing first-hand how complex engineering projects being built near their schools are shaping their communities,” METRONET Sustainability Strategy Lead Alita Hancock explains.

“METRONET is about leaving a legacy for Perth’s future, which is what these children represent.  We are proud to bring this opportunity to local schools in our project areas and support educational initiatives such as this partnership while creating thousands of local jobs and strengthening local communities through our projects.”

Year 2 students from Midvale Primary School were the first young and eager minds to benefit from the partnership, visiting Scitech on Wednesday, 6 March 2024.

The students made the most of the interactive displays and hands-on activities at Scitech, stimulating their imaginations, fuelling their critical thinking, and inspiring their confidence to tackle complex challenges, possibly setting them on a path to becoming the next generation of STEM professionals.

The Scitech Schools’ Access Program offers select primary schools across Perth access to STEM experiences by supporting fees for bus transport and entry into Scitech.
