Students testing PH levels, using field equipment, and building model aquifers and innovative robots to help future engineers – now that’s what we call hands-on learning!
27 students from Ellenbrook Christian College recently completed the Inspiring STEM+ Programme, run by METRONET project contractor Laing O’Rourke, to gain a broad understanding of career opportunities in engineering and construction.

The two-year programme aims to support long-term gender diversity in these sectors by encouraging female high school students to choose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.
Through practical experiences and construction modules studied alongside day-to-day schooling, the young participants covered project development and collaborative design, sustainability and environment, digital engineering and surveying, technology and innovation, and safety in construction.
At the end of the programme, students were fortunate to embark on a site tour of the new Ballajura and Whiteman Park stations being built as part of the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line Project.
A section of the rail corridor for the project passes through the school’s sports field and this proximity has seen project teams work closely with the College on final aspects for reducing the project’s footprint, integrating a new pedestrian underpass, engineering noise privacy screening walls and designing interface works with landscaping and a new sports pavilion.
Overall, the Inspiring STEM+ Programme has been positively embraced by Ellenbrook Christian College and the students, with several showing interest in work experience opportunities and working in the construction industry. The programme aligns with the METRONET Sustainability Strategy and a focus on supporting workforce initiatives to encourage diversity, development and wellbeing.
