It’s been a huge step for the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension Project with the first 2.7 kilometres of rail laid within the Ningana Bushland.
To construct this first section of rail, a 25-person team spent seven weeks laying nearly 14,000 tonnes of ballast and close to 8,000 sleepers – a huge effort that was commemorated with an official visit to the site by former Premier Mark McGowan, Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti, Local Member John Quigley and media.
With the rail now in place, the team is installing overhead line equipment and erecting about 40 masts and associated line wires per day with cantilevers using cranes.
During the wire installation process, a variety of different wire types are attached to cantilevers and installed by a specialised vehicle which can operate on rail tracks and conventional roads.
By the end of the project, approximately 575 masts, 650 cantilevers, 28 kilometres of various wire and 14 kilometres of aerial fibre optic would have been installed. The equipment will power trains with electricity to provide a seamless ride for passengers once the line is complete.
