METRONET, in partnership with the Public Transport Authority (PTA) and Department of Transport, hosted a group of Year 12 Perth Modern School geography students for a ‘Planning Sustainable Cities’ workshop.

Perth is at a cross roads to address sustainability and liveability, and our dependence on private cars and preference for low-density housing is no longer sustainable. The 20 students, currently studying Sustainability were presented with the challenges of urban sprawl and transportation solutions.

The workshop facilitators showedplanning fundamentals using geographical tools and spatial technologies, giving students an understanding and appreciation of how important planning is to achieve the best outcomes for the future.

Students were given the Morley-Ellenbrook Line as a case study for them to put into practise the work the METRONET team is doing every day to identify transport options to better connect the north-eastern suburbs, while minimising impacts and maximising development opportunities. Students applied the planning tools to justify their solutions, some of which our team had already considered in the planning process so far.

The PTA provided further insight into other exciting projects and the many career options the students could be involved in after graduating university.
