More than 54,000 tunnel segments produced – it’s a wrap!

  • 12 April 2019

The Forrestfield-Airport Link has reached another milestone with tunnel segment production now complete.

Approximately 9000 rings of concrete, each made up of six segments, are required to build the tunnels. In just two years the purpose-built facility has made over 54,000 tunnelling segments, and more than 4691 rings have already been permanently installed underground.

Producing the segments involved steel moulds moving through various workstations, via a carousel system, to have different materials fitted before specifically designed concrete was poured and left to steam cure for several hours. Each segment went through a series of tests to give them the green light before they are painted, stored and then delivered to the tunnel boring machines by a purpose-built multi-service vehicle.

Even before the first segment was poured, the concrete mix underwent a number of tests in Germany and Victoria to make sure it met the stringent strength and durability standards.
