The METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line is home to WA’s first 50kVa hybrid solar battery and will help power the Whiteman Park Station site.
This sustainable initiative uses batteries and solar panels during works to replace the need for a diesel generator, saving an estimated 45,000 litres of diesel – the equivalent of taking 42 cars off the road per year.
The 44kW solar panels generate electricity, with excess energy sent to charge the battery and stored for use overnight. The system has exceeded expectations, utilising less than five per cent of energy from the backup diesel generator during the evenings.
Using solar power backed by battery storage provides not only a reduction in energy emissions but also electricity cost savings.
The initiative supports the METRONET Sustainability Strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from materials and energy across the program’s design and delivery phases by 20%.
